The daily news is a tabloid newspaper in New York City, published by the New York Daily News Company. It has been the second-largest selling newspaper in the United States at its peak circulation of 2.4 million copies a day in 1947. The newspaper has a strong local focus, with intense coverage of the New York Yankees and Mets as well as other local sports teams. It also covers national news, politics, the latest celebrity gossip, and has a large section of classified ads. It is also known for its photography and is an early user of the Associated Press wirephoto service, and has a staff of photographers.
The New York Daily News was founded in 1919 by Joseph Medill Patterson. The name was a play on the word “daily,” which meant a paper that appeared every day, and a play on the name of the old Illustrated Daily News, a daily published in 1855–1906. It was the first U.S. newspaper printed in tabloid format, and was the first to publish a color photograph on its front page.
In the 1920s, the New York Daily News found abundant subject matter for its wildly popular tabloid, including political wrongdoing like the Teapot Dome scandal and social intrigue such as Wallis Simpson’s romance with King Edward VIII that led to his abdication. The News was one of the first papers to include a significant amount of photographic coverage, and was a pioneer in the use of wire photos for its editorial pages.
It also emphasized the role of women, and was a leader in reporting on sexual harassment and discrimination against men. The newspaper became an important ally of the labor movement, and supported the creation of unions for municipal workers and other employees in the city.
A major gift from an anonymous Yale alumnus in 2021 allowed the Daily News Historical Archive to move to a more user-friendly platform, and greatly expanded its collection of digitized issues. It is now open to the public.
