Entertainment has the ability to cross all media and is adaptable on any scale, ranging from the individual who chooses a personal entertainment from an enormous variety of pre-recorded products; to banquets adapted for two; to performances intended for thousands; or even the entire global population. Often, although entertaining for its own sake, it has a serious purpose in ceremonial and religious festivals, satire or social criticism. The word is derived from the Latin suffix -mentum, used to form nouns from verb stems (amazement, betterment, merriment, etc.), and from the Indo-European root ten, meaning to stretch or extend. It entered English from French in the late 15th century.
